Perhaps this is like the shrike's habit of impaling its prey. A shrike captures its prey and stores it by skewering it on a branch. Not all of it will necessarily be eaten; some is left untouched. Yet this act is likely an essential part of the hunting process, bringing a sense of accomplishment or reassurance in that moment. Like squirrels burying nuts or foxes hiding their prey, animals may instinctively find comfort in "saving." Similarly, human instincts may also crave this sense of "preservation."
